Susana Shallop

Susana Isabel Genta Shallop June 7, 1938 – February 22, 2021 Susana Shallop, 82, died Monday, February 22, 2021, at the Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation Center, Bridgewater. She was born on June 7, 1938, to Juan Genta and Maria Genta Presno in Montevideo, Uruguay. The oldest of three sisters, Susana loved her childhood in the capitol of her nation, taking part in both the cultural excitement of an urban center and the beautiful beaches of her favorite Punta del Este. She attended convent school and technical college. She was especially proud to represent Uruguay at the Junior World Congress as a delegate during her youth. As a young adult, she decided to travel the world, first visiting her sister and family in New Jersey. Not long after she arrived, she decided to stay forever having met the love of her life, Richard Shallop. They were married three months after meeting each other and continued in that happy state for forty-nine years until Richard’s passing in March of 2020. A giving person, Susana sought out a career in the medical field. She worked as a certified nursing assistant for the Diocese of Paterson in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. She also was a home health aide in private practice in the Morris County area. She enjoyed her relationships with her patients and always went above and beyond in the line of duty. Her empathetic nature served her well in her professional life. Susana was an animal lover. She loved her pets, especially her dog Shag and cat Sylvester. She was an ardent supporter of wildlife conservation. Susana thoroughly enjoyed volunteering as a Pack mom for her sons’ cub scout packs and could always be counted on to pitch in for school, sports, and scout events. She enjoyed watching the New York Yankees with her husband. She also took her sons on many adventures to places such as New York City, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, and Atlantic City, NJ. In her later life, Susana enthusiastically took up crafts, especially flower arranging. During her eight years residing at the Bridgeway, she was always interested in anything that involved arts and crafts. She also participated in a weekly Rosary group. As a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, Susana was equally proud of her home nation of Uruguay and her adopted homeland of the USA. She would loudly sing the anthems to either song and proudly displayed their flags. Once she became a United States citizen, she never missed the chance to vote in an election, filling out a mail-in ballot as she became unable to travel to the polls. Susana is survived by her beloved sons Anthony and wife Heidi and Gilbert and wife Michelle. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Madeline, Jenna, William, Claire, Jacob, Rylan, Bentley, and Zoey Shallop and Bailey Carter. She was predeceased by her sisters Ana Maria and Graciela. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susana’s name to the World Wildlife Fund (worldwildlife.org).
