Shirley Haelig

Shirley Haelig, 82, died Sunday, December 6, 2015, at the New Jersey Eastern Star Home, Bridgewater. Born April 15, 1933, in Somerville, she was the daughter of Sterling and Ethel Risler Apgar. She was a lifelong Bound Brook and Bridgewater resident, graduating Bound Brook High School, Class of 1951. She graduated Bethany College, West Virginia, Class of 1955. Shirley was a devoted mother who supported her children and grandchildren in many activities, including scouting, ballet, and marching band. She was a Bridgewater Band Parent, a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society, a member of the Women’s Literary Club of Bound Brook, the Neighborhood Book Club, and the United Methodist Church of Bound Brook. She enjoyed gardening, her succession of cats, and backyard wildlife. Shirley is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, John R. Haelig; her children, John R. (Patty) Haelig, Jr., of Bridgewater, Ken Haelig of Scotch Plains, Alison Merrill of Berkeley, California, and her beloved grandchildren, Joe Anna and Carlton Grant Haelig. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 10, at the funeral home. Cremation will be private. Friends will be received at the funeral home 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. Wednesday.
