Robert Michael DeCastro, 85, died Sunday, August 27, 2017, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerset, Somerville. Born January 7, 1932, and raised in Bound Brook, he was the son of Angelo J. “Gigi” and Carmella Berdinella DeCastro. He graduated Bound Brook High School, Class of 1949. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of New Jersey, and graduate degrees from Rutgers and Purdue Universities. He served in the Korean war with the First Marine Division, 1950 - 1952. Robert began his career as a classroom teacher in the Branchburg School District. Later, he became an Assistant Professor at Montclair State University, Supervisor with the New Jersey State Department of Education, worked with the Union County Superintendent of Schools, and retired as a Supervisor of Personnel at the Plainfield School District. He was active as an actor in various community theaters, most recently appearing in The Trial of the Century, at the Hunterdon County Courthouse. He was a member of the Thomas J. Kavanaugh Post No. 2290, Manville, and the Stevenson - D’Alessio Post No. 12, American Legion, Somerville. Robert was predeceased by his sister, Louise S. DeCastro, who died October 18, 2016, and his brother, James DeCastro, who died in 1998. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Linda L. DeCastro; his children, Susan (Kevin) Garver of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Betsy (Scott) Spanbauer of Boulder, Colorado, Jeanne (Thomas) Ardiff of Basking Ridge; His brother, George (Barbara) DeCastro of Ocean Township; his sister, Angela (Ronald) Robinson of Bound Brook; his sister-in-law, Patrice DeCastro of Cranford, and his eleven beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Katie, Dave, Joseph, Daniel, Jacob, Hannah, Jack, Robert, Kaitlin, and Michael. A memorial gathering will be held 12:30 P.M. Saturday, September 16, at the Raritan Valley Country Club, 747 NJ Rt. 28, Bridgewater. All friends and relatives are invited to attend and are welcome to say a few words about how Robert touched their lives.
