It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Chief Richard S. Colombaroni, a true pillar of our community and a courageous leader whose 40 years of service left an indelible mark on all who had the honor to know him.
For four decades, Chief Colombaroni devoted himself tirelessly to ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of our community. His unwavering commitment to duty, integrity, and justice inspired all those around him, and his leadership shaped the department and the lives of countless individuals.
Chief Colombaroni, a lifelong resident of Bound Brook, began his distinguished career in law enforcement in 1983 when he was hired as a Dispatcher. Driven by a deep sense of duty and a commitment to serve his community, he attended the Municipal Police Academy in Sea Girt, where he laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable journey.
In December 1983, he officially began his career as a Patrolman, quickly proving himself through his dedication and skill. His natural leadership abilities led to his assignment in the Detective Bureau. In 1998, his hard work and professionalism were recognized with a promotion to Sergeant.
Chief Colombaroni continued to rise through the ranks, becoming Lieutenant in 2015, a role in which he demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication. His unwavering commitment to his department and community culminated in his promotion to Chief of Police in April 2023, a testament to his decades of service, integrity, and sacrifice.
In addition to his extraordinary law enforcement career, Chief Colombaroni also served as Chief of the Bound Brook Fire Department from 1999 to 2000 and was a dedicated member of the department for 42 years. His dual commitment to both public safety organizations speaks to his unparalleled devotion to the safety and well-being of his community.
Even in the face of the most difficult battle - his valiant fight against Pancreatic Cancer - Chief Colombaroni showed the same resilience and determination he exemplified as a Police Officer and Firefighter. He faced each day with strength and dignity, demonstrating the true meaning of courage both on and off the job.
Though he is no longer with us, his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the example he set for us all. Chief Colombaroni will forever be remembered as a man of honor, a mentor, and a true hero.
As we mourn his passing, we also stand united with his family during this incredibly difficult time. Chief Colombaroni was not only a devoted leader and officer, but also a loving father and husband. His legacy of strength, dedication, and love will continue to inspire us all. Our thoughts and support remain with his family, and we will honor his memory by carrying forward the values he instilled in all of us.
Ricky was pre-deceased by his parents, Richard J. and Theresa Colombaroni, and his mother-in-law, Cathy Walchinsky. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Debbie, daughters Thomasina (Dan Shubiack) and Toni Colombaroni, sisters Sharon Schrull (Steve) and Nikki Donahue (Mike), niece Madeline Schrull (Reiss Gaspard), and nephew Jake Schrull.
Rest in peace, Chief. Your service and commitment to the Borough of Bound Brook will never be forgotten.
