Peter T. “Putt” Jannone, 101, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014, one day after his birthday. Born October 24, 1913, in Bound Brook, New Jersey, he was the son of Michael and Aurielia Colacci Jannone. He married Theresa “Tessie” Fiori on November 19, 1939. The couple resided in Bound Brook, moving to Malabar, Florida, in 1982. They returned to Bound Brook in 2000, moving to Wilmington, Delaware, in 2004, to be near their daughter, Ann. Pete was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy Construction Battalion (SeaBees). He saw action in the Philippines. While stationed on attack transport USS Lavaca (APA 180), he was awarded a Presidential Citation for heroism when he dove into strong currents to rescue an unconscious US Marine who had fallen overboard. Fighting the currents, he held the Marine afloat until a rescue party arrived. Following his service, he worked for American Cyanamid Company (formerly Calco), Bound Brook, for thirty years. He then became a Deputy Sheriff for the County of Somerset, New Jersey. Following that, he was a security guard for Devro, Plc., Somerville, New Jersey, until his retirement in 1978. Pete served two terms as a Republican Councilman for the Borough of Bound Brook. He was a member of the Sons of Italy, Bound Brook, Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 988, Bound Brook, Bound Brook Lodge No. 1388, B.P.O. Elks, and was a volunteer for the Bound Brook Chapter of the Deborah Hospital Foundation, Browns Mills, New Jersey. He loved sports, music, and enjoyed dancing with his beloved Tessie. Pete would say of his secret to a long life, “Don’t worry so much. Enjoy life each day. Work hard, drink scotch, and socialize. The world is there for you to do what you want to do if you work hard.” You could always rely on Pete for good advice and help. Predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Theresa, on May 28, 2006, and his siblings, Lawrence Jannone, Julia Rotunno, Lucy Kasas, and Connie Gattone, Pete is survived by his son, Michael Jannone of Somerset; his daughter, Ann M. and husband Patrick A. Delle Cave, grandson Matthew Delle Cave and wife Michelle, his beloved great-granddaughter, Avery Madison, all residing in Hockessin, Delaware; his sisters, Mary Nelson of Pennsylvania, Edith Kuziola, and his brother, Michael Jannone both of Florida. Funeral services will be 9:00 A.M. Monday, November 3, at Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home, followed by a 9:30 A.M. Funeral Mass at St. Mary of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church, Bound Brook. Interment will be at Bound Brook Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home Sunday, 4:00 - 7:00 P.M.
