Nicholas J. "Bucky" Barber, 89, died Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital-Somerset, Somerville. Born October 7, 1926, in Bound Brook, he was the son of the late Nicholas A. and Antonette Romano Barber. He graduated from Bound Brook High School, Class of 1944. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II aboard destroyer escort Halloran (DE-305), supporting the amphibious assault on Iwo Jima. After the war, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and a Master’s degree from Seton Hall University. Mr. Barber was a guidance counselor in the Bridgewater-Raritan school district for thirty-three years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the New Jersey Education Association. He enjoyed golf, Atlantic City and spending summers in Lavallette. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-seven years, Dorothy Bledsoe Barber. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Janet) Barber of Middlesex; his sister, Rita Gilrain of Bound Brook; seven nephews and six nieces. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph R. C. Church, Bound Brook. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bridgewater. Friends will be received at the funeral home between 4 p.m.–7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22.
