Mary Olsen

June 27, 1914 — December 4, 2015

Mary Dubecky Olsen, 101, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2015, at her home, Brandywine at Middlebrook Crossing, in Bridgewater. Mary was born on June 27, 1914, in Yonkers, New York, to Ukrainian parents Ida Bodnar Dubecky (Bohay) and Maxim Dubecky. She lived her young years in Evansville, Pennsylvania, before moving with her parents and siblings to South Bound Brook. Being the oldest of seven siblings, Mary was always looked upon as the matriarch of the Dubecky/Bohay family. Mary had many jobs over her lifetime, though her employment at Macy's Herald Square, New York City, during the 1940s was the one of which she was most fond. She met and married Harold Olsen and eventually moved to Linden. During her early years in Linden, Mary traveled to all fifty states and Mexico. Later in life, she explored Europe with her sisters and South America with her friends. She traced her family tree in Ukraine, and one of the highlights of all her trips, rode a camel in Egypt. Mary loved reminiscing about all the places she had traveled and experiences she had along the way. She enjoyed trips to Atlantic City, dancing the polka with her friend, John, at local senior dance events, and attending area Ukrainian festivals with her family. Mary loved to keep busy and always found an opportunity to enjoy and celebrate life. When Mary turned ninety-six, she left Linden, a town she loved, after fifty-five years, to move to Bridgewater to be closer to her family. Mary was predeceased by her brothers, Peter and John Dubecky, and Paul and Harry Bohay, and nephews Robert and Harry Sutton. She is survived by sisters Stella Bohay Sutton of South Bound Brook, Sophie Bohay Mielnicki of Bound Brook, and many nieces and nephews of the Lopa, Sutton, Greaves/Zabreski, Dubecky, Pirone, Bohay, Spound, and Mielnicki families. Mary was not only an aunt, but a second mother to all her nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 8, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Hillsborough. Friends will be received at the funeral home 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. Monday.
