Leonard Kopf, 88, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his home in Bound Brook. Born in 1926, to Nathaniel and Birdie Kopf, he grew up in the Bronx. On his 18th birthday he joined the Army, serving from 1944-1946. He received the WWII Victory Ribbon and a lapel pin for no lost days. While in the service he was trained as an x-ray technician. He then used his GI bill to continue his education in photography and became a professional freelance photographer. In 1950, he married his sweetheart, Phyllis Matler. They lived in Middlesex before settling in Bound Brook in 1969 to raise their family. In 1954, Leonard obtained his license as a tool and die maker. Several years after that, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories, working his way up to Member of the Technical Staff in Research. In 1989 Leonard retired and he and Phyllis enjoyed many years traveling. Together they visited over 20 different countries and kept quite active, taking adult education classes, including knitting, quilting, and wood working. Mr. Kopf is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Phyllis, his two sons, Jeremy, and his wife, Rose of Green Brook, and Daniel, and his wife, Mary of Bridgewater, his grandchildren, Matt and Billy Kopf, his brothers-in-law, Daniel Balaban and Harry Ettinger, and four German Shepherds.
