Leona Rose Speer, 86, died Sunday, August 2, 2015, at home. Born May 30, 1929, in Taylor, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Joseph and Rose Nykaza Maslanka. She had resided in Bridgewater since 1965. Leona was a graduate of Marywood College, Scranton, Pennsylvania. She taught fourth grade at Green Knoll Adamsville, and John F. Kennedy, schools in the Bridgewater-Raritan School District before retiring in 1988. She was a member of the New Jersey Education Association and was a Communicant of St. Bernard of Clairvaux R. C. Church, Bridgewater. Leona was predeceased by her siblings, Josephine, Edward, Joseph, and Kelly. She is survived by her loving husband, George Speer; her sons, Roy (Laura) Speer of Lansing, MI, Robert (Gina) Speer of Woodbridge; her beloved granddaughters, Chelsea, Alexa, and Meredith; her sisters, Romayne (Steve) Olexovitch of Taylor, Verna Murphy of California, and her brother, Robert (Barbara) Maslanka of Taylor. A Committal Service will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 6, at the St. Bernard Cemetery Mausoleum, 551 NJ Rt. 28, Bridgewater. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101 - 9908. Arrangements are by Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home, Bound Brook.
