Katherine Hucul

Katherine Hucul, 92, died Friday, September 11, 2015, at CareOne at Somerset Valley Rehabilitation Center, Bridgewater. Born December 6, 1922, in Strzalkow, Poland, she was the daughter of Yukhym and Vera Kucharczuk, who settled outside of Kalisz, Poland in a community for military refugees of the Ukrainian National Republic. Raised and educated in Poland, Katherine and her parents eventually made their way to a displaced persons camp in southern Germany where, in 1946, she met and married her husband Michael Hucul. They emigrated to the United States in 1949, settling in Manhattan and moving to Somerset in 1959. She worked as a sewing machine operator for the Excelled Sheepskin and Leather Coat Company of New York for over 25 years, retiring in 1987, after many years of helping to support her home and family. An amicable and hospitable person, active and supportive of Ukrainian community life, she enjoyed cooking and baking, often inviting family and neighbors for Sunday dinner. She was a longtime and faithful member of St. Andrew Memorial Ukrainian Orthodox Church, South Bound Brook, where she was active in the parish and archdiocesan sisterhoods. Katherine Hucul was predeceased by her husband Michael, who died in 1980. She is survived by her sons, Lt. Col. Jaroslaw Hucul (USA, ret.) and his wife Bohdanna of Somerset, Rev. Oleh Hucul and his wife Lidia of South Bound Brook, her grand‐daughters Natalia Hucul Holowka with her husband Stefan, Oksana Hucul Czarny with her husband Zenon, Aleksandra and Elizabeth Hucul, and her great‐granddaughters, Seraphina Czarny and Olena Holowka. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 16, at St. Andrew Memorial Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Interment will be at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home 7:00 ‐ 9:00 PM Tuesday, with a Panakhyda service at 7:00 PM.
