Julius “Jack” Kovacs, 82, died Friday, January 6, 2016, at Hunterdon Care Center, Flemington. Born December 1, 1934, in New Brunswick, he was the son of Julius A. and Emma Schuster Kovacs. He moved to Shinhopple, New York, in 1978, and South Bound Brook in 1998. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving aboard heavy cruiser Columbus (CA 74). Jack and his wife owned and operated Terry’s Shinhopple Campground, Shinhopple, New York, from 1978 until retiring in 1998. He was executive vice-president and hospitality chairman of the USS Columbus Veterans Association. He was a founding member of the Emanon Sportsman’s Club, Hobart, New York. He was a Troop Leader for Troop 193, Boy Scouts of America, Manville. He was active in the South Bound Brook Seniors. A faithful Communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church, South Bound Brook, he served as an Eucharistic Minister, Usher, and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed trips to Atlantic City, traveling, and playing cards with his longtime friends. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Paul Kovacs. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Marie Stravato Kovacs; his son, Robert (Diane) Kovacs of Flemington; his daughters, Cheryl (Wayne) Wilson of Hackettstown, Susan (John) Herriott of Mt. Laurel; his brother, William (Kathryn) Kovacs of New Brunswick; his sister-in-law, Arlene Kovacs of Forked River; his beloved grandchildren, Alyson, Kristina, Emily, Rebecca, Jack, and John Paul “JP,” and nieces Kathy (Buddy) Jones and Debbie Kovacs. Funeral services will be 9:30 A.M. Monday, January 9, at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 A.M. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Interment will be at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway. Friends will be received at the funeral home 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
