John G Grooms Sr.
August 29, 1937-May 29,2024
John G Grooms Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning of May 29, 2024 at his home in
Piscataway, New Jersey at the age of 86. John was born in Paragould, Arkansas to Charles T and Ramona Grooms.
His family made their living in Arkansas as farmhands. John attended school through the Eighth grade and received his
GED through the military during his service. As a teenager, John enlisted in the Army with his brother and served as an
Airborne Army Ranger from 1952-1960 during the Korean Conflict. In his seven years of service, John was deployed to Korea,
transferred to Germany to recover from an injury, afterwards he worked with the border control, and finally transferred to
Fort Benning, Georgia where he was a trainer for up and coming airborne rangers. He left the service in 1960 to be with his
wife Peggy and they returned to New Jersey to be near her family. John was a man of many talents.
Some of his many skills included masonry, landscaping, steel mill worker for Harris Steel,
head of maintenance for Piscataway Township Schools, and general contracting in both the public and private sector.
Since surrendering his life to Christ, his love for God, his family, and his church became very evident through his various
roles of service within the church both at New Durham Chapel and Millington Baptist Church.
He was a gentle leader who was invested in the ways he loved and cared for people by building relationships and
keeping in touch with missionaries.
John greatly enjoyed teaching Sunday School and would always take time to talk about Christ with whoever would listen.
Raising his family in the neighborhood of Lake Nelson, John was invested in the families and integrity of the lake, caring for the dam,
and the neighborhood park. He worked on several projects over the years including public docks,
maintaining the fountains and repairs to the dam.
John and Peggy loved being near the lake and spent many hours relaxing, fishing, frogging, and visiting the ducks with grandchildren.
John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and neighbors in many community events.
John retired from general contracting in order to care for his wife in her later years. John and Peggy enjoyed going on cruises,
seeing shows at the playhouse, and spending time with friends and family on vacation from Maine to Florida.
The time John invested in his local and global community has left a lasting impact on the Piscataway area as
well as various mission fields around the world.
Even in his late years, he was always intentional about what he did to build relationships.
It was always John’s desire for people to know they were loved and that Christ loved them.
John Grooms was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2020 and his siblings Charles and Betty.
John is survived by his sister Shirley and his three children;
John Jr. and wife Linda, Debra and husband William, Janice and husband David.
John and Peggy have eight grandchildren: Brian (37), Michael (36), Danielle (31) and husband Andrew, Benjamin (30), Andrea (27)
and husband David, Kenneth (24), Kimberly (22), and Erin (20) as well as four great-grandchildren: Cameron (4), Alexander (3),
Gabriel (1.5), Elizabeth (almost 1).
His life will be celebrated at Millington Baptist Church in Basking Ridge, New Jersey on Monday, June 3rd.
Visitation at the church will start at 11am with a service following at 1pm. A light refreshment reception will be held following the service.
John’s family would like to thank friends that were available to help with care in his final days, as well as visits and calls that lifted spirits.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Millington Baptist Church Missions Fund or the Wounded Warriors Project.
