John Joseph Leonardis, Sr., 80, died, Friday, June 20, 2014, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, Somerville. Born in Newark, he was the son of Frank and Viola [Osofsky] Leonardis. A graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he received his degree in metallurgy. He was a metallurgist at Bennett Heat Treating, Newark, for 32 years, before retiring in 1992. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 155th Infantry Regiment. He was a member of Bound Brook Lodge No. 1388, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, and Belvidere Post No. 131, American Legion, Belvidere. He was an avid New York Yankees baseball, and New York Giants football fan. Mr. Leonardis, was predeceased by his wife, Helen [Szpiech] in 1991, and his brothers, Frank, Robert, and Richard. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Laurent, and her husband, Jeffrey, of Martinsville, his son, John Joseph Leonardis, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Belvidere, his three beloved grandchildren, Katherine and Evan Leonardis,and Jack Laurent; his brother, Bernard, and his nieces and nephews. Funeral services will begin 9:15 A.M. Tuesday, June 24, at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church in Bound Brook. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Bridgewater. Visitation will be 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. Monday, at the funeral home.
