John Armer, 89, of Middlesex Borough, New Jesey passed away at home on Tuesday June 7, 2022.
Born on November 1, 1932 in Lohberg, GT Altschrenkenthal, Germany, he was the son of the late Ignaz and Veronika Armer. John was known to his grandchildren as “Opa,” his great grandchildren as “O’Opa,” his friends and extended family as “Hans” and his son and daughter-in-law simply as “dad.” John immigrated to the United States with his wife Anna and Son John in 1958. The family became US citizens in 1965 which also came with a name change from Johann to John.
John was employed by Harris Structural Steel Co. in South Plainfield as a steel fitter, and ultimately became a supervisor. He was involved, for example, in part of the construction of the Verrazano Narrows bridge among many other things. He enjoyed skiing, soccer, surf fishing, the shore, in general. Before leaving Germany, he acted as a youth counselor and was a member of a folk-dance group. John was an expert forager of wild mushrooms that grow in the forests of Bavaria. Above all, his family was everything to him.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife Anna in 1994 and his sisters, Margaret and Veronika. He is survived by his son John with wife Lynda of Middlesex borough, New Jersey, granddaughter Karen, with husband Jason and greatgrandchildren Rebecca, James, and Robert of Flemington, New Jersey. Also surviving are granddaughter Kristina with husband Paul and greatgrandchildren Erik and Owen of Madison Connecticut. Also surviving are sister Ingrid with husband Maximillian of Lohberg, Germany plus niece and nephews also all in Germany.
Gathering with the family will be Monday June 13, 2022, from 7pm to 9pm at Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Avenue, Bound Brook, NJ 08805
A graveside funeral service will begin at Noon on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway.
