Joan Vollmer

Joan Ann Vollmer, 82, of Spring Hill, Florida, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2014, due to complications of pneumonia. The daughter of Ukraine immigrants John and Nadia Selsky, Joan embraced her heritage deeply. Joan moved with her husband Lou to Timber Pines in Spring Hill, in 1999. She was very active in her social groups, enjoying golf, water aerobics, and mahjong. Her biggest challenge over the last ten years was battling the debilitating disease Macular Degeneration. Over time it started to strip her of independent activities such as driving. But she was determined to fight on, continuing with assistance to play golf and do the other activities she loved. With the help of Dr. Phillpotts and the incredible staff at St. Luke’s Cataract and Laser Institute in Tarpon Springs, Joan battled on. She received almost 100 eye injections over the years (probably a record) to help thwart the disease's progress. The family would like to thank Dr. Philpotts and his staff for their incredible work and preserving her sight for so long. Joan is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, Lou; her children Louis Vollmer, Peter Vollmer and Cindy Giordano; her Grandchildren Cally Vollmer, Anthony, Danny, Christian Giordano and Joe Jones, and her daughter in-law Saralynn Vollmer, and Son in-law Tony Giordano, all of whom she loved so much. They will miss her deeply. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Bright Focus Foundation (www.brightfocus.org/MDRresearch) to help find a cure. Joan was always hopeful of a cure so others would not have to suffer its consequences. Alternatively, Joan supported the great work of Hospice, so make a donation to your local chapter on her behalf. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, with Panahyda service, at Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 17, at St. Andrew’s Memorial Ukrainian Orthodox Church, South Bound Brook. Interment will be at St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
