Harriet Hartman

d. April 9, 2018

Harriet Rosoff Hartman passed away peacefully at home in Bridgewater, New Jersey on Monday, April 9, 2018. She lived a full life in her 93 years and continued to enjoy and visit with family and friends even in her last days. She will be missed greatly by her family, especially her children, Mark, of New Jersey, Kenneth and his wife Catherine, of Virginia, and Laurie, of New Jersey, and by her grandson Michael, of Pennsylvania, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Harriet was born on August 25th, 1924 to the late Leah and Joseph Rosoff in the Bronx, New York. She grew up in the Bronx with her brothers Danny and Arnie, and her younger sister, Anita, all of whom predeceased her. When she was in high school she was encouraged to continue on to college, but a sense of family responsibility sent her into the workforce instead. Harriet met and married Alfred Hartman in 1947 and they raised Mark, Kenny and Laurie in Hicksville, New York, where they had many dear friends, neighbors, and family members. They moved to New Jersey in 1975 and eventually settled in Warren, NJ. Wherever Harriet went she was active at temple and the Jewish community, most of all for the past 30 plus years at Congregation Knesseth Israel in Bound Brook. Harriet was actively involved with the Shimon and Sara Jewish Community Center as well as the David Kantrowitz Family Benevolent Association, taking joy always in meeting people and making them feel welcome. Harriet was known to all as a kind, loving and generous person, who could make everyone feel welcome and included. Many people have told the family they considered her to be a second mother or grandmother to them. She weathered the many changes of her later life with a positive outlook and a cheerful approach, ever sociable, and she especially loved being “the belle of the ball” at her 90th birthday party. The funeral service was held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Congregation Knesseth Israel in Bound Brook, NJ. Burial followed at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY. The family will be sitting Shiva at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center in Bridgewater, NJ on Thursday, April 12, 2018 from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm and from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Harriet Hartman Senior Scholarship Fund that is being set up by the Jewish Community Center (JCC) to honor Harriet’s commitment to the JCC Senior Program. Checks should be written to the JCC Seniors and sent to the Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, 775 Talamini Road, Bridgewater, NJ 08807 .
