Gladys Chersack, 96, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville. Born in Newark, she lived in Washington, D.C., and Pontiac, Michigan, before moving to Bound Brook in 1951. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Rutgers University Extension College, and her Master of Education degree from Rutgers University in 1963, where she also received her Guidance Counseling Training. From 1952 to 1965 she taught kindergarten thru sixth grade at Lafayette School, Bound Brook. From 1965 to 1969 she worked at Hunterdon Central High School where she was the school social worker for two years, and a guidance counselor for two years. In 1969 she became the guidance director at Bound Brook High School, until retiring in 1980.
Gladys was an active member of The Presbyterian Church, Bound Brook. She was past President of the Bound Brook Woman’s Literary Club and the Bound Brook Ladies Elks, served on the board of directors of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, was Secretary of the New Jersey State and Eastern Archery Association, served with the American National Red Cross during World War II, and was a member of Ruth Chapter No. 12, Order of the Eastern Star, Milltown.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Walter Chersack, in 1996, her twin sister Marian Baldanza in 1985, and her niece, Donna Hildebrand, in 2006. She is survived by her nephew, David Baldanza of Winter Haven, Florida, her niece, Connie Monte of St. Joseph, Michigan, and her nephew, Richard Hildebrand of Bound Brook.
Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 2, at The Presbyterian Church, Bound Brook. Visiting will be Sunday, June 1, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. at Hagan Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Avenue, Bound Brook.
