George N. Helmstetter, 83, died Monday February 6, 2017, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital - Somerset. Born in Newark, he was the son of Nicholas and Albertina E. (Reissner) Helmstetter. George grew up in Irvington and Maryland, before moving to Franklin Township in 1947. He was a graduate of St. Peter’s High School, class of 1951. He built a house in 1960 in Hillsborough and raised his family there for thirty-eight years. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University in 1965, and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1972. George was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1954 to 1956. Stationed in Germany, he was a Morse code radio operator with a Combat Engineering Group. He worked for Egan Machinery in Somerville for thirty-three years, and Krupp, Werner & Pfleiderer in Ramsey for six years as senior engineer. He holds two patents for plastics machinery equipment. After retiring, he volunteered with Somerset County Tax Aides, and served on the HOA Board at Regency Homes in Franklin Township. George loved to play golf and played in various golf leagues right up until this past summer. He also enjoyed attending various lunch groups where he will be sorely missed by the ROMEO Club, (Retired Old Men Eating Out). George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ginny, his son, Karl, and his sister, Dorothy Nadasky. He is survived by his three sons, George and his wife, Marilyn, of Pennington; Timothy and his wife, Felicia, of San Antonio, William and his wife, Rina of Bradley Gardens; his daughter Lori Voorhees and her husband, Richard of Hillsborough; sisters Mary Samaro, Joan Gordon, Elizabeth Rodgers, Catherine Zannoti, Margaret Richards; brothers, Gerald and Thomas; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will begin 9:15 A.M. Saturday, February 11, at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mercy Church, South Bound Brook. Relatives and friends will gather Friday, 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Cremation will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association .
