George W. Fedoriw, M.D., P.E., 74, died Monday, January 2, 2017, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold, after a long illness. Born July 23, 1942, in Nazi occupied Zaporozhya, Ukraine, he was the son of Wasyl and Alexandra Shiglowa Fedoriw. He survived the Nazi labor camp in Stuttgart, Germany, 1943 - 1945, and the displaced persons camp in Nue Ulm, Germany, 1945 - 1951. George came to the United States in December, 1951, settling in Brooklyn, New York. He attended P.S. 19 and J.H.S. 50. He graduated from Eastern District High School, Class of 1960. He attended the City College of New York, and New York University, graduating in 1973 as a Civil Engineer. A Vietnam War veteran, he served in the United States Navy Submarine Service 1968 - 1972, aboard USS Atule (SS 403), and was honorably discharged as a Quartermaster Second Class. George was employed by the New York City Department of Water Resources from 1966 - 1974 as a Civil Engineer. He attained Professional Engineer status in 1975, in the State of New York. From 1975 - 1980, he was employed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as Senior Engineer. He graduated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, in 1979, as a Master of Environmental Engineering. He earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago (UTESA), Santiago, Dominican Republic, in 1984. He was the Director of Water Quality for the County of Monroe, New York, from 1985 - 1997. From slave labor camp to engineer and Doctor of Medicine, George had an extraordinary level of achievement and was an inspiration to all. There was no limit to his intellectual achievement. George is survived by his loving wife, Nadiya Romanenko Fedoriw; his brother, Wiacheslaw W. Fedoriw, M.D.; his niece, Natalka W. Fedoriw, M.D., and his nephew, Wasyl W. Fedoriw, M.D. Graveside services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday, January 9, at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, 280 Main Street, South Bound Brook, New Jersey. Friends will be received at the funeral home 11:30 A.M. - 12:30 P.M. Monday, prior to the graveside service. A Panachyda Service will be held during the course of visitation.
