Georg Vandergoot

October 17, 1943 — December 26, 2024

Georg Christian Frans VanderGoot, 81, passed away quietly in his sleep at home on December 26, 2024 following a Christmas Day spent with family. Born October 17, 1943 in Bussum, The Netherlands, Georg was the beloved son of the late Rudolf and Ans van der Goot. As a young boy, he immigrated to the United States, where he built a life full of service, love, and cherished memories with family and friends.

Upon graduation from Somerville High School in 1961, Georg served his country with honor in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Georg joined the Bridgewater Police Department as a patrol officer in 1966, the start of a distinguished career in law enforcement. During this time, he met and married his loving wife Anne and they welcomed three children in whose lives he was supportive and ever-present.

Georg was a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy 119th Session. He served as a Detective with the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office from 1983 through his retirement as Captain in 1992. During this time, he helped form the County’s Emergency Response Teams and commanded the Crisis Negotiation Team. Following his retirement from the Prosecutor's Office, he was appointed Warden of the Somerset County Jail, a role he fulfilled with dedication until 2002. In his later years, he appreciated the opportunity to serve as a volunteer at Somerset Medical Center.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Georg lived a life of fulfillment immersed in the company of Anne and their children, a close-knit extended family and meaningful friendships. He took special pride in his role as "Opa" to his three beloved grandchildren and treasured his time spent with them. Georg embraced each day with unwavering positivity and had an innate ability to connect with people across all walks of life. His natural inclination was to always put others before self. In his free time, Georg enjoyed his fishing outings with family, collecting coins, and tending to his yard and flowers. He equally loved days at the beach and evening walks in the neighborhood.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Anne; son Matt (Karen); daughter Amy; son Jeff; grandchildren Christian, Cora and Kyle; sisters Rieneke, Maria, and Edla, loving in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. Georg was predeceased by sisters Cory, Ansje, and Liesje.
