Elizabeth Van Nostrand

Elizabeth “Bess” Van Nostrand, 82, died Friday, February 19, 2016, at Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation Center in Bridgewater. Born in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Hjelm and Ruth (Quortrup) Press. Raised in Metuchen, she was a graduate of Metuchen High School, Class of 1951. She attended Somerset County Vocational-Technical School, and in 1979 became a Licensed Practical Nurse, working at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, for seven years. She lived in South Bound Brook for twenty-nine years, before moving to Washingtonville, Pennsylvania, in 1992. She served as Mayor of Washingtonville for four years. She had been a member of the Metuchen and South Bound Brook First Aid Squads, the Danish Sisterhood of America, Freja Lodge No.36, Perth Amboy, and a member of the Reformed Church of Bound Brook, the Washingtonville Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the North Branch Reformed Church. Bess was predeceased by her husband, Bill in 2004, and her sister Peggy Johanns. She is survived by her sons, Howard Van Nostrand and Leanne, of Venice, Florida; Robert Van Nostrand and his wife Julia, of Jeffersonton, Virginia, John Van Nostrand and his wife Christine, of Culloden, West Virginia; her daughters, Cathy Knibbe of Fallbrook, California, Ruthann Pauli and her husband William, of Bridgewater; her grandchildren, Raymond, Keriann, Brian, Eric, Jacob, Liam, and Spencer and her four great grandchildren. The funeral service will be 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 24, at the North Branch Reformed Church in Bridgewater. Visitation with the family will be 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, at the Funeral Home. Cremation will be private.
