Elizabeth Paul

Betty Oak Paul, a longtime resident of Bound Brook and Bridgewater, passed away on December 8, 2017. Betty was born in Painesville, Ohio, in 1926. Her father, Alfred Oak, originally of Perris, California, and her mother, the former Gladys Godfrey of Fort Payne, Alabama, raised Betty along with her three sisters in Bound Brook. Betty graduated from Bound Brook High School in 1944, and from Syracuse University, where she majored in art. While at Syracuse, Betty met her future husband, M.N. “Whitey” Paul. They were married in 1949, and had two children, Richard and Cynthia The family lived in Bridgewater for many years, where Betty gave art lessons, worked at the Bound Brook Medical Center on Church Street, and became an expert golfer, winning the Club Ladies’ Championship at Pike Brook Country Club. Betty and Whitey retired to Brevard, North Carolina, and also lived in Winchester, Virginia, and Coxsackie, New York, near their daughter, Cynthia. Betty, for all of her long life, retained her love of sports, especially golf, and of art, where her talent with oils and pastels never diminished. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Vanstone and her husband, Sam Mento, of Coxsackie, New York; her son, Richard Paul, of Middlesex, and his wife Barbara NIcholls, and their children David Nicholls-Paul of Princeton; Steven Nicholls-Paul of Middlesex, and her sister, Marjorie Jolly of Petersburg, Virginia.
