Edwin J. Scannell, 87, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025.
Born in Hillside, New Jersey to the late John J. and Gilberta Scannell (nee Eaton), Edwin graduated from Hillside High School. He later went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1961, during which he was stationed in Panama.
Edwin worked as the Superintendent of Piscataway Township Public Works. After retiring as Superintendent in 1995, he became a licensed sewer operator for Piscataway.
A man of many passions, Edwin was involved with several different organizations focusing on public education and the environment. He was a member of the Water Environment Foundation, the Delaware & Raritan Canal Fisherman’s Association, the Historical Societies of both Hillside and South Bound Brook, and even participated in the South Bound Brook Planning Board.
Edwin was an avid and skilled gardener who enjoyed propagating his own plants, vegetables, and fruit trees as well as composting.
Edwin is predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife, Marie Elena; and sons Richard and John Scannell.
He is survived by his adored children, daughter Annette and son Steven (Stephanie); seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many extended relatives and dear friends.
All services are private and under the care and supervision of Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home.
