Dorothy Cynthia Bartlett

Dorothy “Cynthia” Bartlett passed away peacefully on December 15th, 2024.


She was born in Woodbury, NJ on August 16th, 1930. She graduated from Cranford High School in 1948. Dorothy then attended New Jersey State Teacher College in Jersey City and graduated in 1953.


Cynthia married in 1953 (nee McCarthy). She got divorced in 1968. She had raised her daughters, Patty (McCarthy) Little and Barbara (McCarthy) Coans. She took close care of Barbara, who was autistic, until an accommodating school for Barb’s needs was available.


Cynthia received a part-time teaching job in 1970 and then in 1972 moved into full-time employment teaching in Franklin Township Public School, Somerset, NJ. She started in May 1972 as a 2nd grade teacher in the East Millstone Annex building, then the Middlebush School on Amwell (both no longer schools). From there she worked at their other elementary schools, Hillcrest, Pine Grove Manor, before finishing her career at MacAfee Road School. She retired after 30 years in June 2002. She also worked in various grades at the elementary school. She retired from Franklin Township Public School in Somerset, NJ in 2003.


Cynthia got married to Ben Bartlett in July 1976 after meeting at their church. Her husband Ben passed away in Nov 1998.


She was very active in volunteering at parks when her daughters were teenagers. She devoted most of her time to the Bound Brook United Methodist Church. She was a longtime and active member of both the NJ State Button Society and Bridgewater Garden Club. At all the local picnics and events, she would love to make and bring her grandmother’s recipe “Sunshine Salad”.


Cynthia was predeceased by her parents Edward and Dorothy (nee Thompson) Gillings; her husband Benjamin Bartlett; her daughter Barbara McCarthy Coans; her sister Betty (Gillings) Tallamy; and her son-in-law Wayne Little.


Cynthia is survived by her daughter Patricia (McCarthy) Little of Bound Brook; son-in-law James Coans of Somerset, NJ; 2 grandchildren Bonnie Rogers (Blake) of Winfield, WV and Jeff Little of Franklinville, NJ; 6 great-grandkids and 1 great-great grandson; 3 nieces and 4 nephews; 13 great-nieces\nephews; stepdaughter Catherine Barrett (John) of Okatie, SC; step-grandchildren Kaitlin Barrett of Okatie, SC, Courtenay Kelly (Austin) of California and Kyle Barrett (Lauren) of Madison, NJ; and one step-greatgrandson.


Viewing will be on Friday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Ave, Bound Brook, NJ.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21st at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, 100-122 County Rd 514/Old York Rd, Ringoes, NJ.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy Cynthia Bartlett’s honor to the United Methodist Church in Bound Brook, the NJ State Button Society, or the Bridgewater Garden Club.
