Mr. Donald “Mike” Haurey, 78, died Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerset. Born in Merchantville, NJ, he was the son of Donald I. Haurey Sr. and Helen (Carman). Mr. Haurey was a graduate of Dunellen High School. He was a Sergeant in the Army National Guard, and an expert marksman, serving from 1961 to 1964. He attended Rutgers University for two years, before becoming a chemist. He worked as a lab technician at National Starch and as a chemist with Betham Corporation in Middlesex for 35 years before retiring in 2001. He developed the formulas for many adhesives, including double stick tape and Kendall brand bandages. Mr. Haurey was a tinkerer and inventor. He built his own computer, devised squirrel proof bird feeders, and fox proof hen houses. He loved morse code, his shortwave and ham radio, going by the handle “Driftway”. He was an avid Yankees fan, loved Frank Sinatra and played the saxophone in a jazz band. He leaves behind his beloved wife of fifty years, Josephine (Frank), of Martinsville; his three daughters, Jacqueline, and her husband, Mike Pirone, of Indianapolis; Lisa Tjong, of South Plainfield; Michele Haurey, of Martinsville; and his son, James Haurey and his long time love, Dominique Herman, of Warwick, NY; his four grandchildren, Matthew, Marc, Brian and Amanda; his brother, Daniel; his sisters, Marilyn, and her husband, Lee Perry, and Nancy, and her husband, Edward Granda; and was a friend of Bill W. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 11, 2015. Funeral services will begin, Friday at 9:15 AM at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church in Bound Brook. Entombment will be at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka Kansas, 66675 (woundedwarriorproject.org) .
