Domenico "Dominic" Tomaro

Domenico “Dominic” A. Tomaro, 93, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Middlesex, to Pietro and Angelina (Mondrone) Tomaro, he was raised there, and later in Bound Brook. He graduated from Bound Brook High School, Class of 1941. He then worked at his father’s grocery store, Interboro Groceries, Middlesex. He enlisted in the United States Navy on October 21, 1942, and proudly served on USS Hamul (AK-20), a Destroyer Tender, as Torpedoman First Class, and saw action in the Pacific Theater, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal with one Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Giles - Biondi American Legion Post No. 63, AmVets Post No. 16, Thomas Kavanaugh Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2290, Manville, and Bound Brook Lodge No. 1388, B.P.O. Elks. He was Communicant of Saint Joseph Church, Bound Brook. Upon his discharge, he was employed at his father’s restaurant/tavern, the Finderne Beergarden, Bridgewater, until 1950. He married the love of his life, Cristina “Camille” Esposito, on June 5, 1949, living in Manville, until settling in Bound Brook at the end of 1954. From 1950 - 1954, he and his wife owned and operated Tomaro’s Grocery Store on West Second Street, Bound Brook. During this time he studied finance, attending Drake College, Madison. He was part owner of a pizzeria in North Plainfield, from 1954 - 1957. From 1957 - 1958, he was a car salesman for Somerville Ford (now Fullerton Ford), Somerville. From 1958 - 1960 he was part owner of the Middlebrook Restaurant, Bridgewater. From 1960 - 1974, he owned and operated the Strand Tavern, New Brunswick, and from 1974 - 1986, was manager for Chatham Liquors Store, until his final retirement in 1986. He served on the Bound Brook Borough Board of Adjustment, Board of Health,, and Office of Emergency Management for several years. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren, building World War II era ship and airplane models, stained glass art working, and the NJ shore. Well known by the citizens of Bound Brook, Dominic will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Dominic was predeceased by his wife, Cristina Esposito Tomaro, who died February 12, 2011, and his daughter, Maria Lynn Tomaro on May 14, 1952. He is survived by sons, Douglas P. (Andrea) Tomaro of Bound Brook, Peter (Melanie) Tomaro of Reidsville, North Carolina, his daughter, Pamela D’Angio of Sugarland, Texas, his beloved nine grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be 9:15 A.M. Monday, December 15, at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 A.M. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church. Interment will be at Bound Brook Cemetery. Friends will be received 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O.
