Alan Lewis Gerber was born December 1, 1954 and died May 25, 2024. He was 69 years old. Born in Bound Brook, NJ and presently residing in Piscataway, NJ, Alan passed away in Las Vegas doing what he loved to do—making music and performing.
Internationally acclaimed, award winning composer, pianist, keyboardist, producer, activist, author and child prodigy, Alan Gerber, performed in a multitude of concerts, TV Specials, recordings, events, clubs and festivals. This includes performing for everyone from Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Charles and Diana, most of the European Royalty in London, three US Presidents to the NY Mets’ 86 World Series Victory Party, Broadcasters Hall of Fame, ESPN Awards in Radio City Music Hall, opening the Israeli Day Parade down Fifth Avenue, and closing out the “Salute To Israel Concert at Central Park” in New York City.
A professional at 13, Alan was the NJ All-State Jazz Pianist, won the Teen Arts Festival—doing a State Dept. tour which brought Jazz to High School students, All-Star pianist at Berklee HS Jazz Band Festival, brought Jazz to Interlochen NMC. He was Student President and graduated with Honors at Indiana University, winning the College Jazz Festival as Best Pianist.
Alan was featured on “Good Day, New York” and PBS performing with such luminaries as Tito Puente, Jr., Bernard “Pretty” Purdie (the world’s most recorded drummer) and Jason “Malletman” Taylor. Mr. Gerber also performed with London Broadway legend Jon Peterson in “George M. Cohan Tonight”, Carnegie Hall, BB King’s NYC for The Blue Note Jazz Festival, The Toronto Jazz Festival, The Lenox Lounge in Harlem, NY and The Garden State (PNC) Arts Center in NJ. Alan also performed on “Fox and Friends”, “The Today Show” and opened up for the Newark Jazz Festival.
Alan composed and performed on numerous records, jingles, movie, corporate and TV scores, and was the owner of Block and Gerber Music, Human Race Records and was a Grammy voting member.
His final performance was at the Fontainbleau Las Vegas Hotel with Malletman Taylor over Memorial Day Weekend.
Alan was the son of the late Eleanor and Jesse Gerber.
Besides music, Alan’s other love was his family—Alan married the love of his life—Shelley Block. They had a whirlwind romance and throughout the years, they remained a solid, passionate couple. They were going to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on July 1. Shelley performed and recorded with Alan throughout their relationship and Alan was an avid supporter of her voice students. He also leaves behind his two most important creations—Jazlana and Jess Barak, both of whom work in the events and performance industry. Additionally, Alan leaves behind Jazlana’s partner, Johnathan. And, finally—Alan’s newest love—his granddaughter, Analia Jade. Alan also leaves behind his brother, Cantor Robert Gerber and sister-in-law Graciela, along with their children, Yonatan, Dafna and Aviv.
Alan lived his life with passion and love. Burial will be private.
